Identity Experiment: PJS

For the header, I used a modified Bahnschrift coupled with an italic Sitka.
Both are available via Microsoft.

I chose a san-serif header in order to build modernist contrast against the dated look of the current branding and also avoiding a WSJ-esque wordmark. The serif Sitka counter-balanced the whole thing with notions of tradition, stability and respect; the journal is already 112 years old after all.
From the 255 Royal Blue of the existing, I blended it down to a more eye-friendly Steel Blue. I also kept the yellow-blue contrast of the title against the blue card, but I mellowed the yellow down to a dark shade of gold.

Partly a matter of keeping familiarity with the existing branding while pushing a bit more elegance.
ABOVE: PJS has always been a creature of print, but in order to fulfill its goals, it must strive further in the digital realm.

BELOW: The revised cover of the PJS app and a view of the revised PJS website. Kudos to STII for developing an app version of the journal. Redesigning the search and UX design of the website will require collaboration with database specialists and information scientists though.
ABOVE: A draft redesign of the PJS website to be search-centric. An oversized search bar will greet the researchers while announcements are pushed further down the page. A small proposed change is with the URL; instead of the lengthy philjournalsci.dost.gov.ph, it can be shortened to pjs.dost.gov.ph

Prospective Facebook page for PJS. The journal currently has no presence in Facebook.
Science cannot exist in isolation from the rest of society. Good design can make it more approachable, user-friendly and relatable to the ordinary citizen. Investing in this aspect can help build awareness, support and funding for the perennially under-appreciated Filipino scientists. It's not perfect, elegant nor award-winning but I believe in design that simply does its job.

All this because I was once a scientist-in-training too.
